Basic Coverage for Ontario Residents
If you are a permanent resident of Ontario and do not have an OHIP card, you must apply to receive coverage for medical expenses. This insurance is free and covers doctor and hospital visits. Apply for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) Card.
If you travel to another province to study, your OHIP coverage remains in effect if you notify OHIP and get approval.
Coverage ends if you leave the country for more than three months. During those months, your coverage is reduced and you may not be completely covered for hospital stays. Our Plan provides you with travel benefits, which includes hospital accommodation, physician charges, and drugs, among other benefits. If you opt out of our Plan, you should purchase alternate coverage if you will be travelling outside ofCanada.
For more information about OHIP, click here to visit their website.
If you are a resident of another Canadian province, you do not qualify for OHIP and you must maintain your home province coverage. Make sure to arrange this with your home province health insurance.
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) insures international students’ basic health and is similar to OHIP coverage. Contact the UHIP Office at any time for more information about your insurance. If you need UHIP family coverage, you must purchase this within 30 days of your arrival.
